Summary: "And I'll be assisting you as your partner. For the whole two weeks."
"My... partner?"
"Yes, your partner. As in, I'll gather information from people and you'll throw out punches when I need you to."

Shizuo knew these people had to have serious balls to do this to him. This was the shittiest situation he had found himself in since... probably since Izaya had gotten him arrested. And big surprise, his current shitty situation was Izaya's fault too. His life would be so much simpler, so much more peaceful without that menace around to fuck with him. If only he had gone to a different high school. Hell, if only Izaya weren't such an annoying asshole. Then maybe his life would be less of a gigantic shitstorm.

But for all his rage, for once Shizuo couldn't do a thing to free himself from the shackles that currently bound him. Normally, chains were as flimsy as paper when he got worked up, but now... he wasn't sure what that lady did to him, or rather what she drugged him with, but he felt like someone had cut the strings between his mind and his body. He wasn't even really standing up; the chains connected to the shackles along his outstretched arms were the only things keeping him upright. His muscles were completely relaxed and his legs hung limply, his feet barely reaching the floor. Shizuo knew the shackles would leave bruise rings in their wake and that thought only served to feed his helpless anger. Fuck, what a shitty situation.

Shizuo heard rather than saw someone approach him. The ceiling was more of a crosshatch and artificial light poked in from above through the tiny holes created by the peculiar design. The light revealed sections of the person rather than their whole body, but it was enough for Shizuo to recognize his kidnapper. Heiwajima Shizuo, the victim of a kidnapping. And by a woman. He couldn't wait until word got out about this in Ikebukuro.

"Have your new surroundings made you more willing to cooperate?"

Cuts straight to the point, Shizuo thought, though her bluntness hardly impressed him. "Right now, I would almost rather kill you than Izaya. So clearly... no."

"Then it's a good thing you can't kill anyone in your current state. You do look quite pathetic right now, Heiwajima-san."

Her taunting did nothing for him. Despite his threat, he really wasn't all that upset at this woman. He was pissed that she drugged and kidnapped him in the first place, yeah... but in the end, things always had a way of pointing back to Izaya. It was always his fault, in some way, since the first day they met.

When Shizuo had first regained consciousness in this dungeon of a room, he had seriously reconsidered their proposition. If they were going to give him this much trouble, then screw his personal honor code! He could play hitman for the day. It's not as if they were asking him to assassinate some innocent person. If it's for Izaya... then maybe he could do it. He tries to kill Izaya everytime he even sees the bastard within a mile of him anyway. Since that's the case, then does it really matter if he kills Izaya for someone else?

Apparently it does 'cause I'm still here, Shizuo thought with a long-suffering sigh. "Look. I don't have anything personal against you or your gang. But I do things on my own terms. And seeking someone out just to kill them is not something I do. Even if it is Izaya."

Shizuo knew his answer would keep him there and the woman's response confirmed his suspicion. "You'll soon see things differently, Heiwajima-san. Otherwise, you will simply stay here and rot. The choice is yours."

-----------------------

Orihara Izaya was always countless steps ahead. So much so that a mere hour after he first got word of the ongoing dilemna, he was all set up and prepared to exploit this highly interesting new development.

Shizu-chan had gotten himself caught in a rather stupid way. Shizuo could take out small armies of men with his bare hands, but put a woman in front of him and he quickly drops his guard. Men were rather weak creatures when it came to the opposite sex, so it figured. But Shizu-chan wouldn't have gotten kidnapped if he had accepted their initial offer, and contrary to what Izaya would have expected, he obviously hadn't. Apparently, Shizu-chan's reasoning went something along the lines of wanting "to deal with Izaya himself, in his own way." How sweet. Certainly that kind of loyalty deserved to be rewarded. And besides... if he played his cards right, there was the chance he could grab hold of a very entertaining opportunity.

So with all this in mind, Izaya had invited himself into and was currently lazing about the meeting room of the up-and-coming Black Butterfly gang. (Izaya thought the alliteration was a nice touch.) Izaya expected a shack of a hideout, but instead got a professional office building. The furnishings of the meeting room were pretty tasteful: a marble sculpture of a butterfly rested on a column in the far left corner, and a circular, green-tinted glass table was placed at the center, the sides lined with sculpted mesh swivel chairs--with headrests! How Izaya wished he had a swivel chair with a headrest. He would purchase one immediately after this whole debacle was over. Though what bonuses they got for decor, they lost in punctuality; according to Izaya's predictions, the leader should have long finished harassing Shizu-chan and arri-

"AHH!"

His thoughts always had the best timing. The leader let out a surprisingly masculine scream at the sight of him. Her two bodyguards just gaped at him in horror for a couple seconds before remembering their job titles and leaping into action. But their hesitation was all Izaya needed to reach them first and slam the handle of his knife into both of their pressure points. He withdrew his blade and backed up to the other side of the room, hands in the air as a sign of retreat.

Izaya licked his lips and smiled. Showtime.

"Greetings, Terumi Reika-san. I apologize for my sudden intrusion. I do come with the best intentions, but I feel like we've gotten off to a bad start." He gestured to the guards now unconscious on the floor, "See, they're bruised at worst. I'm sure you're aware that I'm capable of doing much more damage."

Terumi said nothing for a moment. From the bottom corners of his eyes, Izaya noticed the woman make some indecipherable gesture with her hand.

"If you're trying to signal someone through the hidden security cameras, don't bother. I disabled the system right before making my way in." Izaya's eyes narrowed and cast a cold gleam on his otherwise friendly expression. He wouldn't be able to gain her trust, not by a longshot. But no matter which way they looked, he had the upper hand.

Terumi sighed in defeat. "Fine. I'll play along for now."

"Excellent. I assume my stubborn friend in the basement is still refusing your demands?"

"Correct."

"Good, things are much easier for me that way." Izaya sat at the nearest chair and began spinning himself around in a half-circle. "Congratulations on managing to subdue a barbarian like Shizu-chan. And what an idea, trying to get him to kill me on your behalf. He doesn't quite hate me enough to seek me out himself, but who knows, maybe all he did need was an extra push."

"Well. Apparently he needs more than just a push."

"Apparently." Izaya let the chair slow to a stop. His smile fell with it. "Terumi-san. If I recall correctly, the two of us have never met prior to this."

"Correct."

"And though I have all of Ikebukuro at my fingertips, I have never done anything to slight you or your gang."

"Correct."

"Ah, then this is a very simple matter. There's only one thing you could gain from killing me: power. But the interesting thing about power is, it doesn't always need to be taken away. It can also be shared."

Terumi's smile matched Izaya's in coldness. "Ambitious people can never share power. And why should I even go through that trouble?"

"I'm not asking for a space on your throne. That's not the kind of power I'm interested in. To me, information is power. And information can certainly be shared."

"Even so, I see no reason to form an alliance with you, Izaya-san. Heiwajima Shizuo might be refusing us for now, but another day of being locked up should change his mind. And then we can simply use him to take your power and information for ourselves."

Izaya's eyes widened for a second before he burst into hysterics. This was really too much. "How interesting! You're truly an amusing woman, albeit a foolish one too."

For the first time, Terumi's calm features twisted into rage. "I could have you killed for that comment!"

"And if I wanted to, I could have killed you five minutes ago. Empty threats and banter are clearly going to get us nowhere. I realize that you're more capable than the average thug. And if I weren't an information broker, your bluff could've fooled even me."

Izaya could barely contain his glee. Everything was falling perfectly into place. He was going to love this. "There's only one drug out in Tokyo's black market that acts as a muscle suppressant. There's not very many uses for a drug like that. It's not like most people will get a kick out of losing most of their motor functions. So naturally, there are very few people buying. And only one person has bought a shipment of it recently." Izaya did a full spin in his chair before going in for the kill. "And I also just so happen to know about the temporary nature of the drug's effects."

There was no visible change in the woman's expression, though Izaya knew his words must've sent off several alarms. He continued, "Another reason why there are so few buyers is that the drug's effects wear off pretty quickly. The human body grows immune to the chemicals used in the drug within just a few days. Heiwajima Shizuo is by no means a normal human, so the process could very well be sped up for him. He might already be regaining his strength now. Interesting plan you put into action, but you didn't think far enough ahead. Sure, you could kill him now before he's able to break free. But then you'll claim the unwarranted fame that will undoubtedly come with killing the strongest man in Ikebukuro. Good luck fending off the mobs that will come after your toddler of a gang."

Terumi had to be sweating bullets now. Slowly and systematically cornering people was one of Izaya's most favorite hobbies, and the more confident and self-assured the person was, the greater the pleasure Izaya took in breaking them. And best of all, the night would only get more and more fun from this point on. From the looks of things, he would soon be able to play with his most favorite toy of all.

"Rest assured, Terumi-san. You currently have two of the strongest men in Ikebukuro in your hands. If you're willing to cooperate, I think we can come to an agreement that will leave everyone happy."

----------------------

Despite the realization that he could very well die in this room, Shizuo wasn't despairing. He didn't even feel panicked. He might lead a mostly solitary life, but surely someone would notice if he were gone. Tom was probably trying to figure out his whereabouts that very moment. Celty and Shinra were likely to eventually figure it out too, and Celty alone was more than capable of busting him out. Then there was Izaya. Not that he expected anything from the bastard. There was always the possibility that his kidnappers would end up killing him before anyone else could reach him... but even if that were the case, someone would find out about it eventually. And Celty would probably take it upon herself to find and tell Kasuka. Just knowing that was enough to bring him a little relief.

Though Shizuo had reason to hold onto his hopes of escaping on his own. For some reason, he was starting to feel less weak. The drug couldn't have been wearing off. When the woman came by maybe half an hour ago, she had administered another dose of the drug. If anything, its effects should be stronger than ever. But instead, he was quickly regaining feeling in his arms and legs. At the same time, he was also starting to feel really tired. Aside from when he was briefly knocked out after being first given the drug, he hadn't slept at all the past couple nights, so it made sense for him to be sleepy. But it had come a little too suddenly. He was wide awake just fifteen or so minutes ago. Now he felt like he could doze off any second.

Just when he was about to, he stirred as he sensed a presence in the room with him. At first, he thought it was the woman again, but noticed that these footsteps sounded completely different. Much quieter. Familiar, actually.

He felt a sense of dread wash over him and clenched his teeth. He still couldn't see the newcomer, but his body reacted instinctively, as if he were repelled by the other person's very being. The feeling was unmistakable. Hell no, Shizuo thought, prayed. But sure enough, there he was, strutting in with a stupid ass grin on his stupid ass face.

"I thought I smelled a rat. Have you dropped by to point and laugh at me? Hm, Izaya-kun?"

----------------------

Oh, now this was priceless. Izaya would probably never, ever again have the chance to talk one-on-one with a drugged up and subdued Shizu-chan. He barely talked to Shizu-chan at all, really; their "conversations" usually consisted of Shizuo yelling obscenities at him while chasing him out of Ikebukuro. Izaya stopped just a couple feet short of Shizuo's restrained form. He would so enjoy this.

"Shizu-chan, you wound me. Do you really think I would let someone as precious to me as you are die at the hands of some random gangster?"

"Yes."

"You wound me again. And after I worked so hard to negotiate for your life."

With a catch, of course, Shizuo thought. Even though his mortal enemy was within arm's reach, it was still a struggle to stay awake. His eyelids felt like weights over his eyes; he could feel them drooping against his will.

Izaya took note. He grabbed Shizuo's chin and snapped his head up to face his directly. Izaya's voice took on a darker tone, "And then you try to doze off in the middle of our conversation. Pay attention to me when I talk to you, Shizuo."

Izaya's eyes bore into the other's, and Shizuo let loose a low growl. It was so soft, he was borderline purring. Izaya found it intriguing how very primal Shizuo behaved in his presence.

"Let go of me." Shizuo paused, then, "Or I swear I'll kill you." He added the statement like a reflexive afterthought.

"Would you really? I save you and death is how you would repay me? I think anyone would look at our situation and think that you owe me a huge debt. Besides," Izaya's eyes gleamed, his expression as cutting as his knife, "At least own up to it, Shizuo. If it were me captured in your stead, even if I refused to kill you, you would have left my sorry ass here to die."

Shizuo's expression changed somewhat. Maybe he felt a tinge of shame or guilt. Izaya couldn't quite tell. When it came to Shizuo, all other emotions were obscured by his fury.

But Shizuo couldn't bring himself to really listen to the other man's words. It was the way Izaya looked at him, like if he let his guard down for a second, the other man would entrap him and eat him up whole. Shizuo would never trust him, never understand him. Not ever.

"You owe me, Shizu-chan." Izaya let go of the other man's chin and instead used the back of his fingers to stroke Shizuo's cheek.

"What. Are. You. Doing." Shizuo was giving him the funniest, most freaked out look, like he couldn't even begin to comprehend what was going on right now.

Izaya smirked. Poor, confused boy. "Oh, I dunno. What am I doing?" At this, he roughly grabbed Shizuo's hair and pulled his head back, exposing his neck. He leaned in close, until he could feel Shizuo's breaths ruffle his hair, and gently sucked on the underside of his chin. When Shizuo failed to react, probably due to shock, he let his tongue slowly make a trail across Shizuo's jawline. Izaya could almost taste his indignation.

"The HELL. What the FUCK do you think you're doing? I'm going to KILL you, you son of a bitch! Get the fuck back here! I'll ring your fucking neck!!"

Izaya retreated a good five feet away. Shizuo had regained enough strength to uselessly flail against his restraints. "Now, now, Shizu-chan."

All Shizuo could make out was Izaya taking something that twinkled silver out from his coat pocket. Izaya put the object up to a stripe of light so that he could see it better. It was large silver key hanging from a metallic circular band. It looked to be a perfect fit with the keyholes of his shackles. "...how did you get that?"

"There've been some important new developments in your case." Izaya continued. A playful smile graced his lips once more. "I've made a deal with your captor. She's willing to let you go. You don't even need to kill me in exchange! But in the end, whether you leave this place alive or not still depends on you."

Izaya drew close to the other man once more and wrapped his arms around Shizuo's neck. Shizuo tensed up immediately, as if he were defending his body against attack. Izaya locked his hands around the back of Shizuo's neck. "You have two choices, Shizu-chan. One: you die right here, right now, while I walk away a free man."

Yeah, what a wonderful option that was. Shizuo had known this would be rigged. Though as infuriating as Izaya was, the tiredness was really getting to him. It was a struggle just to stay conscious.

"Two: volunteer your services to Terumi-san for the next two weeks. You'll be using your muscle to help her and her gang rise to power." Huh, Shizuo thought. That actually didn't sound too bad. It was a chore, but he was expecting much worse.

"And I'll be assisting you as your partner. For the whole two weeks."

...What. Shizuo blinked. Then blinked again. Had he heard that right? "My... partner?"

"Yes, your partner. As in, I'll gather information from people and you'll throw out punches when I need you to."

"What?? Fuck that shit. Why do we need to work together? You're not some damsel in distress. You don't need protection."

"Ah, but the partnership is part of the contract. And besides, I'm not as skilled as you at defending myself against large crowds. And unfortunately, we'll likely run into a lot of those."

"Then I refuse. No fucking way."

In the blink of an eye, Izaya whipped out his knife from his pocket, flicked it open, and had the sharp edge of the blade mere millimeters from Shizuo's jugular. "In that case, would you prefer if I slit your throat?"

Shizuo said nothing. Izaya could almost see the wheels spinning furiously in the other man's head. "Be more optimistic, Shizu-chan. If you approach this from a different angle, you'll see that this is actually a wonderful opportunity."

Izaya withdrew the knife and stepped back a few feet before continuing, "How about we up the ante a bit, hmm? Let's make a deal. If you're able to deal with me throughout these whole two weeks, then I'll disappear from Ikebukuro. Permanently."

"Yeah right. Anyone could see through that obvious lie. You've never left before, so why would you change your mind now?"

"Just because you threaten me to leave doesn't mean I will. When have I ever agreed to stay out of Ikebukuro? All this time, you've just been chasing me out against my will. But I'm saying it now. I'll leave Ikebukuro. Forever."

Maybe Shizuo was so tired that he couldn't think straight anymore, but... Izaya sounded sincere. Then again, this was Orihara Izaya, Master of Deception. He could fake sincere with fresh blood on his hands. "I don't trust you."

"And neither I you. But think about it. What do you have to lose? The only way you can fail is if you quit or if you kill me. In which case, you'll be rid of me anyway. But think of what will happen if you succeed! You'll finally rid yourself of me without having to kill me! And you'll remain innocent of murdering someone due to your tragic rage impulses. See, Shizu-chan? Isn't this fun already?" Izaya clapped and let out a joyous cackle of a laugh. It was all far too perfect. Izaya felt near bursting. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath to calm himself. "Besides. From how I see things... you have no choice but to trust me, Shizu-chan."

Shizuo fought back the urge to growl again. Izaya was right. No matter how he thought of it, Izaya was right. It sounded like a win-win situation. Even if Izaya was lying about leaving Ikebukuro, it was still a win-neutral situation. He had nothing to lose by doing this, except being constantly annoyed for a couple weeks. But at the same time, he couldn't shake off the feeling that he was falling into a trap. Shizuo's every instinct screamed danger--hell, Izaya was danger itself in a living, breathing body. Yet even so... his argument was convincing. If he could put up with Izaya for two weeks, he would prove that he was that much better at managing his anger. He'd have to sleep with one eye open the whole time, sure... but there was also the chance that Izaya would finally back the fuck off once and for all. A flimsy chance, but...

Shizuo was tired of thinking about this. He was tired in general. So tired. Izaya was staring at him rather intently now and it gave Shizuo the creeps. "Huh," Izaya commented, "The drug must be really wearing off now if you're that tired."

"Wha? How did you...?"

"I'm an information broker. It's my job." Izaya was using that pompous tone of voice he adopted everytime he knew something Shizuo didn't. The bastard. "Even if you weren't aware of it, the drug Terumi-san gave you put your body in something akin to a constant state of stress. Most people have trouble sleeping when they're stressed out and it seems you're the same. Now that the drug's effects are wearing off, you're starting to feel how tired you really are."

Izaya's explanation alone could have put him to sleep. At least if he fell asleep, he wouldn't have to think about this. He didn't have to see Izaya's stupid face either. Unless he dreamed about Izaya. Which would be really messed up. Shizuo would rather dream about Freddy Krueger. Stupid Izaya. Stupid kidnapper lady. He was so tired.

Oh, screw it all. He didn't want to deal with Izaya's mind games right now. He didn't care anymore. The bastard could do whatever he wanted. And with that, Shizuo succumbed to sleep.

------------------

"Hellooooooo~!" Izaya slapped him a couple times for good measure. Out like a light. Oh well, Izaya thought with a light shrug. He already knew Shizu-chan's answer anyway.

He used the key to unlock the shackles. Once he unlocked the last of them, he caught Shizuo's body before it fell to the ground. "There, there." Izaya patted Shizuo's head with mock affection before unceremoniously dragging him away.

Shizuo was damn heavy. And Izaya would have to lug his body all the way to the upper floor. He'd also have to finish making arrangements with Terumi, then figure out what to say once Shizuo woke up. But even with all these troublesome thoughts in mind, Izaya couldn't help but grin.

No matter. The next couple weeks were sure to be memorable, to say the least. And all this trouble would be worth it in the end. In Izaya's mind, he knew he would win.

Arghhh~ do want more~

I love fics where Shizuo actually acts like Shizuo around Izaya. Some people make him too gentle. Izaya's proper here, too. Great characterization!

Ah, yeah, that's one thing that kinda bugs me too. Shizuo's not much of a gentleman around Izaya, after all. ^^;;

There's definitely more coming~

Love it! You really have their voices down; I could picture it as though watching the anime.

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Poor Shizuo: kidnapped by woman, 'rescued' by Izaya XD This is really interesting! I'm intrigued and I can't wait to see next chapter. When are going to upload? ;-)

Sorry for mistakes but my I'm not English :)

Haha. I guess since that's the only real convo Shizaya has had so far in the anime, a lot of people assume that that's how they address each other all the time. Plus, Shizuo's sing-song "Iiiizaaaayaaa-kuuuun~" was real memorable. xDD

The characterization was fabulous, especially Izaya's. The plot was also both intruiging and believable!

I'm definitely looking forward to more. Keep up the good work!

Wow, that was amazing. Your Izaya made shivers of delight run down my spine.
The plot is great, teasing the reader's appetite for more. Everything else I wanted to say was probably alredy mentioned in the comments above... Then, I'll just say again: amazing. Feels really high quality. Will be look forward to the continuation of the story, I'm sure it's going to be lots of fun. [maybe not for poor Shizu-chan, though, lol]

Ahh, this is really well-written and in-character. And I've always wanted to see how badass it would be if Shizuo and Izaya worked together :P Can't wait for more.

OH MY GOD THIS WAS GREAT.
Probably the most in-character, believable fic of these two I've read thus far. I love your writing style - it flows so nicely, and the dialogue is ldkjhfhnng PERFECT. I was captivated by the first sentence and I think I hardly blinked until the end (which I was sad to see, because I WANT MORE).

I cannot wait to see how this continues!

Fabulous, I can't wait to see what happens next. I agree with everyone else as well, you hit the characters spot on.
