Summary: "And I'll be assisting you as your partner. For the whole two weeks."
"My... partner?"
"Yes, your partner. As in, I'll gather information from people and you'll throw out punches when I need you to."

The uneventfulness of the past few days only made Shizuo more and more anxious. He was beginning to wonder what the point of all this was. Why did Izaya think he would need a bodyguard if all he did was talk to drug dealers and corporate execs? There certainly weren't mobs of people going after them, as Shizuo had been led to believe. Izaya could easily handle these type of people all on his own, so why was he there? Was Izaya really planning to keep annoying him until he got himself killed? There was no way things could be that simple. Izaya wouldn't let himself fade from the world that easily, no way. There just had to be some trick to all this, some cruel punchline waiting for him at the end of these two weeks.

But if Izaya had something planned for him, he sure was taking his sweet time letting that plan unravel. Ever since they talked to Shinra a few days ago, Izaya had barely even spoken to him. He threw him the occasional scrap of information and an insult here and there, but otherwise, Izaya spent his time talking on his phone or meeting with people. Sometimes, when Izaya had nothing to keep himself occupied, he just didn't say anything. Kind of like what was happening right now.

All Shizuo knew was that they were waiting to meet with the leader of some colored gang... the pink palookas or something. He didn't care. Whoever these people were, Shizuo hated them already. They were over half an hour late. A whole half hour of Shizuo staring at the ceiling in silence, while Izaya did only God knew what. Shizuo sure as hell didn't want to be the one to start up a conversation. Though it had become easier to tolerate the other man's presence, Izaya's endless prattling still pushed his buttons. He was glad Izaya wasn't verbally prodding him. But for some reason, the absolute silence was starting to bother him too.

He needed some kind of distraction. Hopefully the pink palooka whatevers hadn't stood them up. Why the hell were these people so late, anyway? They couldn't possibly be doing anything that important. Worse yet, the meeting place reeked and it was getting on his nerves. The two of them were in an abandoned warehouse that served as one of the gang's hideouts. Or at least that's what he overheard Izaya say over the phone as they were walking to the place. The warehouse was the definition of dingy: the paint on the walls was peeling in most places and hardly any light even made its way in. After giving the place another once-over, Shizuo realized he had been thoroughly spoiled by Black Butterfly. In comparison to the office building he had grown accustomed to, this place... was a shithole.

"It stinks." The words escaped Shizuo's lips almost unconsciously. He wasn't trying to start a conversation, he rationalized. He was simply talking to air.

But contrary to his expectations, his offhand remark received a response. "Isn't it just me?"

"Huh?" He jerked his head in the direction of the other man's voice and was startled to see him leaning against a wall and smirking down at him from just a few feet away. How long had he been that close?

"You can smell me, can't you? My scent repulses you." Izaya seemed more amused by his assumption than offended.

"For once, it isn't you. I've been inundated with your smell, anyway. I've probably gotten used to it by now." Shizuo grimaced at the thought. Tom was probably the only other person outside of family that he'd ever spent so much consecutive time with. Granted, he hung out with Celty often, but they hardly ever spent an entire day with each other. Lately, he had been spending so much time with Izaya exclusively that they may as well have been living with each other. It was kind of horrifying.

"Then I guess your senses adapt faster than mine. Since I can still smell you."

The statement hung thick in the air. He can... smell me?

Shizuo could have ended the conversation right then. With a remark as odd as that, there was no way inquiring any further could lead to anything good. But Shizuo was curious. Izaya's words couldn't be fully trusted... but what did he smell like?

Izaya quirked his eyebrow playfully. "So what?"

"Don't play dumb. What do I smell like?" Shizuo spat out the words as quickly as possible. He hated being strung along like this.

"Hmm..." Izaya crossed his arms and stared at the floor, seemingly in thought. "You probably expect me to say that you stink or something... but you don't. It's not a bad smell." At this, Izaya peeked up at him.

"What, you want details?"

"Well. 'Not bad' doesn't really mean much."

Izaya laughed. Shizuo didn't get what was so damn funny. "You're more of a child than I expected. Not that I expected you to be a bottomless well of maturity or anything."

"Are you going to answer the question or not??"

"Yes, yes, calm down. It's just... kind of difficult to describe. It's not a pretty scent. You definitely smell like a man. But it's not all musk and sweat and testosterone either."

"Can't you be more direct? Or are you only capable of speaking in riddles?"

"Hah. I'm only speaking in riddles because you're such a difficult person to get a handle on. Your scent is like you as a person: strong, intoxicating, infuriating, overwhelming, but not overall unpleasant when stripped bare."

...What? Shizuo sat up and simply stared at the other man. What... did that even mean? It would've seemed like a compliment, if only Izaya weren't looking at him with such cold interest, as if he were some lab specimen.

"What are you even trying to say?"

Izaya didn't respond. Something about the look in Izaya's eyes made Shizuo feel that he would find out the meaning behind Izaya's words soon enough.

Shizuo clenched his fist. He wanted answers now. Screw abiding by Izaya's pace. If he let himself be strung along, if he let Izaya always dictate what to reveal and when, Shizuo wouldn't find out just what the hell this bastard was thinking until it was too late.

"Is that it, then, Izaya? Are you going to 'strip me bare?'" Shizuo's grin looked fiercer than ever. He was ready for this fight. "Have fun dissecting me, asshole. You might be surprised by what you find."

A commotion from the opposite end of the room prevented Izaya from responding, if he even intended to respond at all. Light flooded in from the small opening created by the now-open door. A group of about a dozen, all young and buried under gold chains and baggy purple clothing, filed in one-by-one.

"Hey! You the Butterfly people?"

These men were much too simple. Izaya loved humans in a broad sense, but he didn't love them individually. And he certainly did not love these men.

"I might not be from this neighborhood, but I do know how this business works. And I definitely know a good deal when I see one." The man who appeared to be the leader of the Purple Pockets was not an impressive sight to behold. In Izaya's opinion, he looked a little too old, like some washed-up gangster has-been. Perhaps he had failed to take over some big-name Tokyo gang in his youth and was now forced to settle for a gang as small and washed-up as him. "But frankly--what's your name again?"

"Orihara Izaya."

"Orihara. What you're proposing is obvious bullshit. The amount you Butterfly people are offering is street change in comparison to how much money we could make in the future."

"More like, the amount of money you would have made if Black Butterfly didn't plan to buy out all your surrounding territory."

"Tch! You're kidding yourselves if you think it'll be that easy. All the other gangs in the area will tell you to piss off, just as I am now."

Izaya highly doubted that any other gang in Ikebukuro would be foolish enough to tell him to 'piss off.' It was always more troublesome dealing with people from out of town. Izaya always had to work harder to put them in their place. Thankfully, the man's lackeys appeared to be well-aware of exactly who he was; every single one of the dozen or so men accompanying the leader stood at a noticeable distance away from him and especially from Shizuo.

"Black Butterfly isn't telling you to cease and desist. We only wish to operate in this territory. You can move to another territory if you want. We don't care."

"You're a stubborn son of a bitch." The man yelled over his shoulder at the men behind him. "Taka! Get me my bag."

A young boy emerged from behind the group of men carrying a duffel bag roughly a third of his size. He had such a small presence that even Izaya had barely noticed him until just then.

"Idiot!" The leader hit the boy over the head, causing him to fall to the floor. "This is Hiroki's bag! My bag isn't even that color, you dumbass." The boy wordlessly got up from the floor and retrieved a black bag of the same shape and size.

The leader reached into the bag and pulled out a thick wad of cash. "This is how much money we made the past couple days alone. You say we can move to any other territory? This territory is the one with the money! And you think you can barge in here and kick me out? Don't make me laugh. Now get the hell out of here before I tell my boys to kick your asses."

Izaya was barely even listening to the other man anymore. The conversation bored him. He could map its trajectory from the very start. And besides, something much more curious was occurring. No one else likely picked up on it, but a certain someone was beginning to stir. Maybe if Izaya pushed it just a little bit further...

"Who's the boy?"

The man seemed taken aback by the question. He glanced in said boy's direction, who kept his eyes firmly on his feet. "What does he have to do with anything?"

"I didn't expect to see a child here. I'm just a little curious as to what role he plays for you." Izaya had a pretty good idea of what was going on. This boy was clearly no Masaomi Kida. There was only one role a weakling like him could play in a gang.

"Role? This kid doesn't have a role. He just does whatever the hell I tell him to do."

"How much did he cost?"

"Haha! Are you kidding? I wouldn't pay a cent. He's my brother, so I'm stuck with him. At least he makes himself kind of useful. Why, are you interested in bu-"

He was interrupted by the sharp sound of a cigarette stick snapping in half. "Your... brother?"

Izaya smiled. His little brother, of all things. This turned out even better than he had expected.

"Hey, Boss. Maybe you should try talking to them again tomorrow. Think things over for a bit."

"Y-Yeah! Maybe the deal isn't as bad as it seems!"

"Shut up, you morons! Thinking it over isn't going to change anything."

"Boss... I don't think you realize who these people are. We should just let them go..."

The air was thick with their fear. Izaya could feel it gathering in his lungs. When filled with rage, Shizuo always did have this amazing effect on people. No matter how deftly Izaya handled his blade, no matter how well he could twist a person's mind, he would never be able to inspire this level of instinctual terror. Heiwajima Shizuo could crush mere men with his presence alone. It was truly a thing to behold.

"What, are these guys famous? Is the blond prettyboy over there some celebrity? Like I give a shit." The leader scoffed. His men backed as far away as they could.

"What-" Shizuo stomped out his cigarette.

"The hell-" He took a step forward.

"Kind of brother-" The leader made a choking noise as Shizuo grabbed him by the collar.

The man tried to smack Shizuo's hand away, who only tightened his grip in response. "Get off me. It's not any of your business how I treat my brother." His previously arrogant tone was now faltering. Shizuo's eyes were pushing the bounds of how wide they could stretch open. He looked borderline psychotic.

"It might not be my business. But you see, mister, there's been this painful throbbing in my head these past few minutes. It's real annoying. But I get the feeling that if I beat your face into the ground, it might just go away."

The leader stared, unblinking. Finally, he seemed to understand that he was dealing not with men, but with monsters. "Wh...who the hell are you people? Wha-AH!" A second later, he was in the air and crashing through a window ten feet above ground.

I loved it! I'm the anonymous who bugged you to post on the last chapter, btw ;)

Again, good characterization, especially with Izaya this time. I see Shizuo as being pushier and more willing to start conversations just to get in Izaya's face. It's cool reading other people's interpretations.

I still really want to know where this is going... with the mysterious black butterflies and everything.

I hope you get back soon from wherever you are and update!

I know I've said this on the last chapter, but it still amazes me just how well you write in-character.
